ISPA is a South African non profit company, and recognised Internet industry representative body. Formed in 1996, ISPA has historically served as an active industry body, facilitating exchange between the different independent Internet service providers, ICASA and other government structures, operators and other service providers in South Africa.
Online gaming in South Africa is often plagued by high latencies. The closest servers for many popular games, such as PUBG, Apex: Legends and Fortnite, are often located in Europe. In fact, online gambling is becoming a pastime favorite in South Africa, with the sixth edition of the gambling outlook 2017-2021 showing a 3.9% increase in total gross gambling revenue. That is, R27 billion in 2016 alone from casinos, limited payout machines, bingo and betting. Gambling illegally at home is a much smaller problem than these physical ’internet cafes’. As of May 23, 2018, reports have started filtering in that ’Stars is no longer permitting South Africans to access the site’s online gaming products. The only types of online betting allowed in S.A.
